How to graft tomato #diy project

Many will be surprised, as it happened to me, that tomato plants can be grafted. It was from the 90s of the last century that this technique began to be extended in intensive tomato cultivation. At present, the use of grafted tomato plants in many tomato producing countries is very common due to its undoubted advantages. There are different techniques and here we are only going to see one, possibly the simplest one.
Benefits or virtues of grafting in tomato plants:
  1. It is a sustainable alternative to the use of chemical disinfectants for the earth
  2. In cases of little or no rotation of crops prevents "sudden death" of plants
  3. It allows to grow tomatoes in areas with irrigation water of excessive salinity as well as in areas of saline soils
  4. Increase the production and size of the fruit
  5. They resist drought and low temperatures better
  6. They can absorb more nutrients from the soil
For this, very resistant varieties are chosen that act as rootstocks and the grafted ones that are chosen for their fruits.

For this task we will need a razor blade and graft clips to hold both plants. Two cuts are made at 45º, descending in the rootstock and ascending in the graft. It is better to do this work during some cloudy and fresh spring days. Thus the plants will be in a certain rest and will be able to concentrate their energy in healing the wounds caused.
